Our Facilities
Hannibal Regional Hospital Pediatric Therapy Services is comprised of certified and licensed Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Physical Therapists and Speech-Language Pathologists.
All practitioners have extensive training in treating children ages birth to 18 with special needs and developmental delays. Our therapists create individualized treatment plans to achieve goals that meet child and family needs.
Our therapists are also providers for the Missouri First Steps Early Intervention Program which provides therapy in the home for children birth to three years. (www.mofirststeps.com)
Treatment Process
A physician’s referral is necessary to receive therapy evaluation and/or treatment. If you have concerns about your child’s development, talk to your primary care provider or pediatrician and request a prescription for an occupational therapy, physical therapy and/or speech-language evaluation. Screenings
If you suspect your child has a delay but are unsure, you may call to set up a free screening with a Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist and/or Speech Therapist. Theses screenings are a brief five minutes and will determine if a full assessment is warranted for your child.
Speech Therapy
Our Speech-Language Pathologists evaluate and treat deficits in speech, language, swallowing/feeding, social skills/pragmatics, Apraxia, autism, voice and other skills necessary for communication. The goal of speech therapy is to assist children in achieving optimal speech and language skills so they can communicate effectively with others and optimally participate in their daily activities.
Diagnoses assessed and treated include but are not limited to:
- Delayed language acquisition
- Articulation and phonology disorders
- Apraxia
- Autism Spectrum Disorders
- Receptive and expressive language disorders
- Swallowing/feeding difficulties
- Stuttering
- Voice
- Orofacial myofunctional “tongue-thrust” disorders
- Pragmatics/social skill impairments
- Speech and language disorders associated with Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome and genetic syndromes
- Evaluation center for Alternative Communication devices

Occupational Therapy
Our occupational therapists work with infants and children who are challenged in reaching their developmental milestones in social, self help and fine motor areas, as well as with children who are having difficulty organizing and integrating information from their environment.
The goal of occupational therapy is to help each child participate in everyday activities of their lives, such as playing with other children, dressing/caring for themselves, and helping out at home.
Conditions we treat include:
- Developmental delay/prematurity
- Feeding/eating concerns
- Neurological disorders
- Neuromuscular disorders
- Problems with fine motor/coordination
- Problems with handwriting Problems with self care (i.e. dressing, bathing, grooming)
- Sensory integration
- Autism spectrum disorder
- Problems associated with Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome and genetic syndromes
Physical Therapy
Our physical therapists address the movement concerns your child might have. They assess muscle strength, joint movement, gross motor coordination, balance, endurance and motor planning through age appropriate play.
The goal of physical therapy is to maximize your child’s ability to work towards their gross motor milestones and improve quality of movement. They also work on problems with walking delays and/or deviations.
Conditions we treat include:
- Low muscle tone
- Problems associated with Cerebral Palsy
- Developmental delay/prematurity
- Problems associated with Down syndrome
- Gait abnormalities/walking difficulty
- Gross motor coordination problems
- Leg length discrepancies
- Lower extremity factures, sprains, strains
- Muscle tightness/weakness
- Postural dysfunction/scoliosis
- Torticollis/plagiocephaly Problems associated with Muscular Dystrophy, genetic syndromes and neurological/neuromuscular disorders
Financial Aid
If your child requires speech/language therapy and insurance coverage isn’t available, scholarships are available to those who meet specific clinical and financial guidelines through the Scottish Rite program.
